Eletrobras has invested in Brazil’s energy for 49 years. In electrical energy, the country’s development motor, and in energy that emanates from the various ways Brazilian people express themselves. That is why the company has had a long tradition of incentive for culture. Hundreds of projects funded by Eletrobrás have stirred Brazil’s cultural setting, lightening the stages and other places intended for music, theater, dance, plastic arts and education. 

The company is also the official sponsor of Vasco da Gama (a soccer club) and the Brazilian basketball teams.

Eletrobrás’s Culture Program

The program, which has been created with the purpose of expanding the access democratization to the resources yearly intended for the sponsorship of cultural projects, is in its second edition in the year 2010 and launches, for the first time, a joint announcement encompassing all the companies pertaining to the Eletrobras System.

Eletrobras System’s Culture Program 2010
Projects from all over the country are entitled to participate of the Eletrobras System’s Culture Program 2010, in the following modalities: adult theater presentations, audiovisual (feature-film), movie and theatre festivals and intangible culture (folkloric culture manifestations). The selection of the funded productions will be carried out by a joint committee, composed by renamed professionals of each area contemplated by the program.

The first edition of the program has promoted a national public selection for support of theater presentations.

Theater


The company is one of the major stimulators of theater spectacles in Brazil. The theater was the main focus of the Eletrobras’s Culture Program first edition and it is among the modalities selected to integrate the sponsorship announcement of 2010.

Cinema



Eletrobras encourages the Brazilian cinema. Among the movies funded by the company, we can find “Carandiru” (“Carandiru”), “Eu Tu Eles” (“Me, You, Them”), “A Festa da Menina Morta” (“The Dead Girl’s Party”), “Lisbela e o Prisioneiro” (“Lisbela and the Prisoner”), “Guerra de Canudos” (“War of Canudos”), “Deus é Brasileiro” (“God is Brazilian”), “Tainá 2” (“Tainá, Part 2”), “Casa de Areia” (“House of Sand”), “Benjamim” (“Benjamin”), “Amarelo Manga” (“Mango Yellow”), “Copacabana” (“Copacabana”), “O Caminho das Nuvens” (“The Middle of the World”), “O Coronel e o Lobisomem” (“The Colonel and the Werewolf”), “Bicho de Sete Cabeças” (“Brainstorm”), “Ó Paí, Ó” (“Ó Paí, Ó”), “Amores Possíveis” (“Possible Loves”), “Zico na Rede” and “Lixo Extraordinário” (“Waste Land”), that won the audience award in the documentary competition in the Sundance Film Festival 2010 and the Amnesty International Film Prize in the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival.

Our Cinema NGO
Supported by Eletrobras, Our Cinema NGO uses techniques from the audiovisual field to promote social inclusion. In 2009, 69 movies were produced by 19 workshops, in which 324 students had participated. In the same period, the NGO promoted eight longer courses counting with the participation of 158 children and youths. Last year, Our Cinema NGO displayed 276 movie sessions in the movie theater located in its headquarters, in Centro, Rio de Janeiro, counting with the presence of about 8300 viewers.

Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro

Eletrobras is one of the sponsorships in the restoration work of the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro for its centenary, which has been celebrated in 2009. The Company has invested approximately R$ 15 million in the work.

Vasco da Gama



Eletrobras has sponsored, since July 2009, Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama (a Soccer Club). The contract term is four years and it establishes investments in soccer, in Olympic and Paralympic sports, and in social responsibility projects.

The partnership establishes unprecedented social benefits in the relationship between sponsor companies and sports associations. The Mão na Massa (Hands-On) project, which qualifies women to work in civil construction, is one of the projects that will benefit from the investment in Vasco. The club also intends to use the investment to encourage actions that promote the social inclusion of children and adolescents through sports.

Basketball



The company is the official sponsorship of the men’s and women’s basketball squads as well as of the National Basketball League (New Brazil Basketball), besides of funding the centers of the Future Basketball project and supporting the Street Basket.

Future Basketball
The Future Basketball Project was implemented in the year 2005 with Eletrobras’s support. The project is coordinated by the Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB) and it has the purpose of teaching, through the sport practice, how to deal with the difficulties of living in areas stained by the violence and social inequalities. There are centers of the project all over the country, where free basketball classes are offered to children and youths from poor communities. 

Street Basketball International League (Liibra)
It is a Liibra’s street basketball championship organized by Cufa (Unique Center of the Favelas) that mixes sport to hip hop cultural features. The fifth edition of the contend was held in 2009 and it was also funded by Eletrobras. About 2 thousand people have attended to the event, under the Negrão de Lima Viaduct, in Madureira - a neighborhood located in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro.

Publications


Eletrobras sponsors the publication of books that are considered important to Brazilian history and culture, that is, which help preserve the Brazilian memory and identity and help disseminate the legacy of our great artists and thinkers. In the past years, this sponsorship has allowed the publication of “Dicionário Houaiss da Música Popular Brasileira” (“Houaiss Dictionary of Brazilian Popular Music”) and books “Jardim Botânico – 1808-2008”, “Bonfanti”, “Rio de Janeiro – 1930-1960” and “Palácio Piratini” ("Piratini Palace").
